BUILDING A LIFE BY CARPENTER JESUS IS A PRESENTATION OF THE DIVINE WISDOM WHICH IS BOTH PRACTICAL AND SPIRITUAL FOR THE LIFE MORE ABUNDANT, A LIFE THAT BLOSSOMS INTO RATIONAL BEAUTY AND RADIANT HAPPINESS. JESUS ALSO USED THE KNOWLEDGE OF HIS PROFESSION AS A BUILDER OF EDIFICES TO ILLUSTRATE THE WISE APPROACH WE NEED IN ORDER TO BUILD OUR OWN LIVES INTO THE HARMONY OF OUR FRIENDLY UNIVERSE AND TO EXPERIENCE THE LOVE, GOODNESS AND BEAUTY OF GOD.

In both Hebrew and Greek thought at the time of Jesus, “carpenter” symbolized a wide field of architectural and constructive talents in both wood and stone. Biblical testimony calls, both Jesus and his father, Joseph, carpenters, a profession which was in fact more like the “art of building” and as a result, both in Hebrew and Aramaic, the word had a figurative meaning of a ‘wise man’ or ‘Scholar’. This made sense when one considers that a carpenter, as a small independent businessman, did. He planned (drafting/blueprinting), he measured (mathematics), he considered the cost of building (economics), the strength of wood, metal, or stone with which to build (architectural physics), the suitability of the foundation and the natural science needed for the landscaping (foolish is the man who does not build upon rock), whether or not his partnership could handle the job, the length of time it would take to, finish the project, and where to purchase the materials needed. One who would take the same approach to planning his life, its economic, social, and spiritual needs would indeed be considered a wise man. Jesus’ teachings constantly show the wisdom needed for many building activities as well as building one’s life and where one’s true joy and treasure are.
